In 1947, he began working as a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar in New York City. In 1955, he began an odyssey across the US travelling throughout a 2 year period and taking 28,000 shots for his book. He subsequently selected 83 shots for the book. Jack Kerouac wrote the Introduction.
